Hungry, Why Wait?

This is a line that my sister once put on a tin can filled with candy that she had in our room.  It has always been well known that she loves candy and as far as she was concerned, there was no good reason for her to wait to have it, which might explain why she never had as much to trade when we all spread out our supplies on the playroom floor.  But then again my brother was always kinda on the other extreme!  I fluctuated…  ANYWAY… ahem.

I wanted to use my sister’s candy slogan (which I was informed was also Snickers) to illustrate a prominent trend in our culture.  Think about it.  Where does this slogan not apply?  Hungry for *food* hungry for *attention* hungry for *entertainment* hungry for *approval* Why wait to be satisfied?  Fill up on whatever is easiest.  You can have everything you want now!  You don’t have to wait to be fed!  We are constantly told to satisfy our hungers with relationships, media, fashion, or whatever else we crave.  And get this, we are told not only how to remedy our hunger but also what our hunger actually is!  Our culture defines our needs and provides us with all the answers too!  All we have to do it sit back, listen, and believe it all.  What’s wrong with this picture?  Not to be too corny, but we are literally being spoon-fed the whole bit!

Of course it is true that we all have needs and desires.  We have longings because we live in a world with other sinners.  We are ALL bad people.  We ALL struggle.  But if that is true, then it doesn’t make sense to look to others for the answers to our problems.  I mean, if your marriage was falling apart, would you go to someone getting a divorce to find answers?  Would you go to a poor person to find out how to get rich?  It just wouldn’t make sense.  So if we’re all wrong where do we get the answers?  Simple.  The only place we have to go is to God’s word.  He alone does not struggle.  He alone is perfect and without sin.  Apart from Him, we cannot satisfy the hole in our lives!  People try the culture’s answers all the time but are always left feeling that they still need something else.

One last thing.  While it may be humorous to think of a little girl’s candy slogan, there actually is truth to it.  We are hungry and while that hunger cannot be satisfied with love, possessions, popularity, knowledge, or other superficial things, it can be satisfied right now.  We do not have to wait to find the solution.

“It is time to seek the Lord…” Hosea 10:12
“Seek and you shall find.” Matthew 7:7
“For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” Psalm 107:9
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”  Acts 16:31

We are all hungry, yet we have the perfect solution.  So, “Why wait?”
